Recognizing Romance Scams

Romance scams are the most serious threat facing online daters, particularly seniors. Scammers create fake profiles, build emotional relationships, and then ask for money. Please read this section carefully.

🚨 NEVER do these things — they are always scams:

  • Send money, gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency to anyone you have not met in person
  • Provide your bank account, Social Security number or financial information
  • Click links in messages that ask you to verify your account or claim a prize
  • Send intimate photos to someone you have only met online
  • Pay for someone's travel to come visit you

⚠️ Warning signs of a romance scammer:

  • Their profile photos look like professional model photos — do a reverse image search
  • They say they are working overseas (military, oil rig, doctor with international organization, engineer on a project)
  • They move very fast emotionally — declarations of love within days or a week
  • They always have a reason they cannot video call or meet in person
  • They have a dramatic emergency — medical crisis, accident, legal problem — that requires money
  • They ask you to move the conversation to WhatsApp, Google Hangouts or email immediately
  • Their English seems slightly off — unusual phrasing or grammar errors inconsistent with their stated background

✓ How to verify someone is real:

  • Do a Google reverse image search of their profile photos
  • Video call early — before getting emotionally invested
  • Ask specific questions about their local community, synagogue or neighborhood
  • Search their name and city on Google and LinkedIn
  • Ask to meet in a public place within the first few weeks of talking
  • Trust your instincts — if something feels wrong, it probably is

Safe Dating Practices

1

Protect your personal information early on

Do not share your home address, workplace, phone number or financial information until you have met in person and established trust. Use the JSoulMates messaging system until you are comfortable.

2

Video call before your first date

A 15-minute video call before meeting in person is now standard practice. It confirms the person is who they say they are, saves travel time, and gives you a real sense of them before committing to a date.

3

Meet in a public place for the first several dates

Choose a restaurant, coffee shop, museum or JCC event for your first meetings. Do not invite someone to your home or go to theirs until you know them well.

4

Tell someone where you are going

Let a friend, family member or neighbor know where you are going, who you are meeting and when to expect you back. Check in with them after the date.

5

Arrange your own transportation

Drive yourself or use a rideshare for the first several dates. Do not accept rides from someone you have just met online.

6

Trust your instincts

If something feels wrong — if you feel pressured, uncomfortable or uneasy — trust that feeling. You are never obligated to continue a date or a conversation that makes you uncomfortable.

See Something Suspicious?

If you encounter a profile that seems fake, a message that feels like a scam, or any behavior that makes you uncomfortable — please report it immediately. Your report protects not just you, but the entire community.

Safety FAQ

What happens when I report someone? +
Our safety team reviews every report within 24 hours. If the report is substantiated, the user is suspended or permanently removed. You will not be notified of the specific action taken, but all reports are taken seriously.
Will the person know I reported them? +
No. Reports are completely confidential. The person you report will never know you filed a report. When you report someone, they are also automatically blocked so you will no longer see each other.
I think I may have been scammed. What should I do? +
First, stop all contact immediately. Do not send any more money. Report the profile to us at safety@jsoulmates.com. If you have sent money, contact your bank immediately to report fraud. You can also file a report with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov. Do not be embarrassed — these scammers are professional criminals who target caring, trusting people.
How do I block someone? +
On any profile or in any conversation, tap the three-dot menu (⋮) and select "Block." The person will be immediately removed from your matches and messages. They will not be notified that they have been blocked.
Is my phone number shared with other members? +
No. Your phone number is never shared with other members. Only your first name, age, location and the information you choose to put in your profile are visible. You choose when and how to share your contact information.
What is JSoulMates doing about romance scams specifically? +
We manually review all profiles before approval, use automated detection for suspicious behavior patterns, monitor for accounts that try to move conversations off-platform quickly, and permanently ban confirmed scammers. We also provide this Safety Center to educate our members. If you see suspicious activity, reporting it helps us protect everyone.
